St. Leonard

St. Leonard

abbot, patron of prisoners · † c. 559
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… to proclaim release to the captives.
— Luke 4:18

A Frankish nobleman who declined a bishopric and lived as a hermit. The king allowed him to free the prisoners he visited, and many of those freed joined him. He is the patron of prisoners and of livestock; there are churches of St. Leonard all over Central Europe. Freedom is a gift you can give.
