St. Callistus I

pope and martyr · † 222
Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
— Mark 2:17

A former slave who, after unlucky financial dealings, ended up in the mines of Sardinia. After his release he became a deacon, keeper of the catacombs and finally pope. He championed mercy towards sinners. The past does not close the way to service.
