St. John XXIII

pope · 1881 – 1963
When you go home, give your children a caress and tell them: this is the caress of the pope.
— Address by moonlight, 11 October 1962

The son of poor farmers, elected at 77 as a “transitional” pope. He surprised the whole world by convening the Second Vatican Council. His goodness and humour won people's hearts. It is never too late to do something great.
