January 8
On this day the Catholic Church remembers
St. Severinus of Noricum

St. Severinus of Noricum

monk, apostle of the Danube · c. 410 – 482
I was hungry and you gave me food, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.
— Matt 25:35

As the Roman Empire collapsed and barbarians plundered along the Danube, the monk Severinus organised help for the hungry and for refugees. He refused to talk about his origins – he simply served. In times of chaos, one faithful person can change a whole region.
