December 11
On this day the Catholic Church remembers
St. Damasus I

St. Damasus I

pope · c. 305 – 384
Your word is a lamp to my feet.
— Ps 119:105

The pope who entrusted St. Jerome with translating the Bible into Latin – the Vulgate was used for a thousand years. He restored the tombs of the martyrs in the catacombs and wrote beautiful poetic inscriptions for them. Reverence for Scripture and for the witnesses of faith go hand in hand.
