St. Nicholas

bishop · c. 270 – 343
When you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.
— Matt 6:3

A bishop of Myra who, according to legend, secretly threw bags of gold through an open window for a poor father so that his three daughters would have a dowry. From this comes the custom of giving children presents. The most beautiful gifts are those for which you expect no thanks.
