St. Martin of Tours

bishop · 316 – 397
Lord, if your people still need me, I do not refuse the work.
— Last words, according to Sulpicius Severus

A Roman soldier who at the gate of Amiens cut his cloak in two and gave half to a beggar. That night he saw Christ wearing that half. He became a monk and a bishop. In Central Europe St. Martin's Day brings the first snow – and an invitation to share with those who are cold.
