August 27
On this day the Catholic Church remembers
St. Monica

St. Monica

mother of St. Augustine · 331 – 387
The son of so many tears cannot perish.
— Words of a bishop to Monica, Confessions III, 12

For seventeen years she prayed and wept for the conversion of her son Augustine. She followed him all the way to Milan. At last she saw his baptism and died peacefully soon after. She is the patroness of mothers. Prayer for loved ones is never wasted.
