Sts. Pontian and Hippolytus
That they may all be one.
— John 17:21
Hippolytus was a learned priest who opposed the pope and became an antipope. The emperor sent both, Pope Pontian and Hippolytus, to forced labour in the mines of Sardinia. There they were reconciled and both died as martyrs. Suffering can reconcile even enemies.
