disciples of Sts. Cyril and Methodius · 9th century
Naked are all nations without books.
— Proglas

Gorazd, a native of Great Moravia, was described by St. Methodius as “a free man of your land” and was meant to be his successor. After Methodius's death he and other disciples were imprisoned and expelled. They went to the southern Slavs and there developed Slavonic learning. Light cannot be put out.
