— The Passion of Perpetua and Felicity

A young noblewoman, mother of an infant, and her slave, who gave birth in prison, died together in the arena of Carthage. Perpetua kept a diary, one of the oldest texts written by a woman. In Christ there is neither master nor slave – only sisters.
