February 8
On this day the Catholic Church remembers
St. Josephine Bakhita

St. Josephine Bakhita

religious, former slave · 1869 – 1947
If I were to meet the slave-traders who kidnapped me, I would kneel and kiss their hands, for if that had not happened, I would not be a Christian today.
— Memoirs

As a child she was kidnapped and sold as a slave; fear even erased her own name. In Italy she came to know God and freedom and spent the rest of her life in humility and kindness. Even the darkest chapter need not have the last word.
