January 17
On this day the Catholic Church remembers
St. Anthony the Great

St. Anthony the Great

abbot, father of monks · 251 – 356
I saw all the snares of the enemy spread over the earth… and I heard a voice saying: humility.
— Sayings of the Desert Fathers

As a young man he heard in church the words: “Go, sell what you possess.” He obeyed literally and went into the desert, where thousands came to him for advice. One bold step of obedience can begin a new way of life for the whole Church.
